Two-Factor Authentication: Keep your account secure!

Do you have a Consolidated SmartHub account? Set up two-factor authentication to help keep your information secure.

Two-factor authentication is a simple step that can make a big difference in your online security. If you enable two-factor authentication, SmartHub will ask for a second layer of security in addition to your password each time you log in. This second layer will come through a single-use code that you can have sent to your mobile phone or that you get from a code-generator app.

Why is two-factor authentication important?

Two-factor authentication is a great way to keep your information safe online. It makes it much harder for hackers or other bad actors to break into your accounts, even if your password is stolen or leaked. We recommend enabling two-factor authentication on all of your online accounts that offer it, not just SmartHub!

How do I set up two-factor authentication?

You can find the option to enable two-factor authentication under “settings” in the menu on your Consolidated SmartHub account. If you are unfamiliar with this process, we have created user guides to provide you with a step-by-step walkthrough:

It’s time to plant!

Paperless Billing Results

From October 2023 to March 2024, we ran a campaign encouraging members to sign up for Paperless Billing. At the beginning of the campaign, we pledged to plant a tree in our service territory for every 100 members who changed over to Paperless during that time.

More than 3,400 members made the switch, so we have 34 trees to plant!

We will be planting in the following locations from November 5-14:

  • Berkshire Township Community Park
  • Morrow County Park District – Cedar Fork Park
  • Morrow County Park District – Flying Squirrel
  • Morrow County Park District – Gleason Family Nature Reserve
  • Candlewood Lake Association
  • The Village of Cardington
  • Woodside Village Care Center
  • Big Walnut Intermediate School
  • Brown Township Hall
  • Highland High School
  • Preservation Parks – Hickory Woods Park
  • Delaware County Fair
  • Radnor Township Hall
  • Leeds Farm

Thank you, Riverside Native Trees!

We partnered with Riverside Native Trees, a restoration nursery on Consolidated lines in Delaware, to get our trees, including red maple, common hackberry, bur oak, and northern catalpa. Riverside grows native trees and shrubs from seeds collected locally, which gives our tress the best chance at successful growth and a long life when planted here in Ohio.

Right Tree, Right Place

As a certified TreeLine USA Utility, we know that trees play a vital role in the health and beauty of our communities, and we train our crews to protect them while they work in the field.

Properly placed trees can help you save energy by providing shade in the summer and blocking wind in the winter, but trees that are not planted correctly can be hazardous.

If you are considering planting trees near your home, please visit the Arbor Day Foundation’s website for guides that will help you plant the right tree in the right place by considering things like mature height, canopy spread, and growth rate. These guides will help you ensure that your trees provide the function and aesthetic that you are hoping for without posing a threat to your home or powerlines.

Speak up for reliable, affordable energy!

The Energy Information Administration (EIA) projects that U.S. power demand will reach its highest levels ever in 2024 and 2025.

Despite this increase in demand, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is moving forward with regulations that threaten to close always-available power plants and make it harder to build new power plants.  These regulations will increase the risk of rolling blackouts while also making energy more expensive.

Check out this statement from America’s Electric Cooperatives to learn more about the EPA’s new rules and the ways they would impact America’s electric grid.

Our economy and everyday lives increasingly depend on electricity, and we need our elected officials to prioritize policy that keeps the lights on. We were fortunate to experience mild weather 2023, which helped keep demand down and blackouts at bay. However, increasing demand could lead to blackout risks even in temperate conditions.

Please join us in advocating for reliable, affordable energy! Voices for Cooperative Power (VCP) has made it easy to write a letter to your elected officials and advocate against overreaching policies that make it more challenging and expensive to keep the lights on.

It only takes a couple of minutes to make a big impact. Learn more and send your letter today!

New Program: Custom Bill Videos

Energy use often fluctuates from month to month, especially as seasons change. You may not always notice that you are using more energy until you get a bill that is higher than usual.

Our new custom bill video program is designed to help you understand spikes in your energy use and avoid unexpected energy costs in the future! As we send out energy bills each month, we will email a customized video to any member whose bill went up by $25 or more since the previous month.

These automated videos will be tailored to each individual member and provide insight that helps you understand why your energy use increased.

Don’t miss your custom videos!

There are two steps to ensure that you receive your custom video if your energy bill qualifies:

  1. Make sure that we have your correct, up-to-date email address on file. You can update your contact information on your Consolidated SmartHub account, or by calling us at 800-421-5863.
  2. Add our email address to your contacts to ensure that your videos won’t go to spam. These videos will arrive in your email inbox from this address: No-Reply@consolidated.coop

Special Weather Statement: Extreme Cold

We experienced an influx of frigid weather in January. These temperatures can elevate Ohio’s risk for blackouts, and they led to a peak alert for our natural gas service. Please read through the information below to learn more about peak alerts, blackouts, and energy conservation.

Natural Gas – Peak Alert*

On January 13, our natural gas supplier issued “Transport Critical Days,” which means that all natural gas purchased during this time will cost more than usual. Transport Critical Days often occur during extreme cold snaps like this one, most recently during the arctic blast in December 2022.

As a not-for-profit cooperative, our rates reflect the costs we pay for the services we provide you. This means that we never charge extra to make profits, but it also means that when our costs increase, our members’ costs do too.

Help us keep costs down for all natural gas members by conserving during these Transport Critical Days. While conserving will not change the rates, it will help us purchase less natural gas while rates are high. The less we have to purchase during this time, the less impact it has on our members.

Our supplier estimates that Transport Critical Days will be in effect through the end of January. Due to our supplier’s timing, these increased Transport Critical Day costs will likely be reflected on your March natural gas bill. We will send another reminder closer to that time.

*Please note, this peak alert only impacts our natural gas service. This will not affect costs for our electric, propane, or fiber services.

Electric Grid Reliability

According to a November 2023 report from The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), Ohio and much of the eastern United States are at an elevated risk for energy emergencies and rolling blackouts during extreme temperatures this winter. As your cooperative, we are committed to providing you with safe, reliable and affordable energy. While we are doing everything we can to ensure that your lights stay on, there are some factors outside of our control.

As temperatures go down, energy use goes up, increasing the strain on the electric grid in our region. While Ohio’s Electric Cooperatives have more than enough energy to meet the growing needs of our members, we rely on the larger electric grid to deliver that energy to you. Check out our Energy Policy Resources to learn more about reliability and affordability concerns, and what we’re doing to advocate for you.

If Ohio co-ops have enough energy, why are we still at-risk for blackouts?

While we own and operate our local distribution lines, substations, and other equipment, the electric grid as a whole is managed on a regional level. Grid operators like PJM – the organization that coordinates the movement of electricity in Ohio and surrounding states – work to keep the grid safe, balanced, and reliable.

When demand for electric energy is too high – because demand is greater than the grid’s transmission abilities or because there is not enough energy available – grid operators can require utility providers like us to systematically cut power to prevent widespread, uncontrolled outages or full grid blackouts.

Rolling blackouts are a last resort that will only occur if absolutely necessary. However, we cannot control if or when they occur, and they may come with little or no warning. While electric co-ops across the nation are pushing for energy policy reform that helps make the grid more reliable, we have to be prepared for blackouts until that reform comes.

Energy Conservation

To help keep the power on for everyone, we may call on you to help us reduce demand and by conserving energy during extreme temperatures. During the winter, demand is typically highest in the early mornings when temperatures are low and families are up and getting ready for work or school. Here are a few simple steps you can take to make a big impact:

  • Lower your thermostat by a few degrees while you are home.
  • Unplug unused electronics and appliances.
  • Avoid using major appliances like washers and dryers during times when demand is highest.

Even if blackouts were not a risk, it would still be important to conserve energy during extreme temperatures to help keep energy costs affordable. Learn more about high demand and its impact on costs here.

Outage/Blackout Preparation

As stated earlier in this article, blackouts may occur with little to no warning. Please take steps now to ensure that you and your family are prepared if a winter outage occurs – whether it is caused by storm damage or a rolling blackout order.

Review the list below and check out our Winter Storm Preparation page for important safety information and more preparedness tips:

  • Follow our Facebook page for timely updates on outages and major weather events.
  • Make sure you are familiar with all of our outage reporting and tracking options.
  • Make a plan with your doctor or pharmacist to make a plan for medical equipment or medications that require electricity.
  • Maintain an emergency kit with necessary items like non-perishable food, water, flashlights, batteries, a first-aid kit, etc.

Delaware County Broadband Survey

We started Consolidated Fiber with the goal of bringing reliable, high-speed internet to the underserved in our rural communities. We are working hard to make our fiber-to-the-home internet service available to all our members as safely and quickly as possible, but we know that there are others near our service territory who need better service options.

From now through December 4, Delaware County is asking residents and business owners in the county to take a brief survey to report on the internet options available to them. While our focus is on our members, we know that our communities cannot reach their full potential until everyone has access to the internet service that they need.

If you have Consolidated Fiber service, this is a great opportunity to show off your internet speeds and let Delaware know that your area is covered. We also encourage you to share this survey with friends and family in Delaware so that they can help the County and the FCC understand which areas are in need of better internet service. It only takes a few minutes, and Delaware needs as many residents as possible to respond.

Not sure if Consolidated Fiber is available where you live? Check out new, interactive map to see if you have access and get connected!

Our Commitment to Security

As your electric provider, part of offering excellent service is keeping that service secure and reliable. You are probably familiar with the many ways we keep our system reliable – from repairing equipment to prevent wear and tear to practicing vegetation management to keep our lines clear. You’ve also heard a lot from us recently about the ways we advocate for energy policy that ensures your power stays on. However, you may not see the dedicated work that we put into ensuring our system and your information remain secure.

Our team undergoes regular training to ensure that we keep the grid safe from cyberattacks like phishing, data leaks, or compromised passwords. In addition, we are protected by state-of-the-art systems from national cybersecurity organizations.

Because we are a cooperative, we work together with co-ops across the country to develop new technologies and infrastructure, to learn from each other, and to keep the grid secure. Thanks to this community of co-ops, we are all stronger and better prepared for anything that comes our way.

We can’t stop a storm or predict every possible disruption, but we will always do everything in our power to keep the lights on and our members protected.

Join us in advocating for a reliable, affordable, and secure electric grid! Learn more about current issues and the ways you can use your voice here.

Fiber – New Lower Rates!

A man with a surprised face. The text reads: No contracts. Lower Prices. Superior Internet.

We just lowered rates across the board for our residential fiber-to-the-home internet service, and we are no longer requiring contracts!

Check to see if Consolidated Fiber is available where you live, then start your order today.

About Rates:

As a not-for-profit cooperative, we are committed to only charging the amount that it takes for us to continue providing excellent service.

The costs of building and maintaining our network are being shared among more of our members than when we first started, so everyone can pay a smaller monthly share. Our lower rates will make our service accessible to more members, which will help us continue maintaining excellent service at this lower cost.

This change will not affect rates for gas or electric services. Though inflation has affected the cost of fiber materials, internet service is not subject to the same changing policies and demand challenges that have been driving energy costs up across the nation.

About Contracts:

When we first started, we needed contracts to protect our investments into our fiber-to-the-home network. As Consolidated Fiber grows, it has become clear that contracts are no longer necessary – our subscribers don’t want to give up our service once they have it!

New subscribers will not have to sign a contract to get our service. If you are a current subscriber, you will continue to get the same great service at our new lower rates until you tell us you want to make a change.

Plan Speed Changes:

You may have noticed that we bumped up the speed of our first two plans – Fiber 100 is now Fiber 300, and Fiber 250 is now Fiber 500! If you were on Fiber 100 or Fiber 250 before this change, we raised your speed to match our new plans!

We decided to raise our speeds because it’s better for our subscribers, and our fiber-to-the-home network can support the change while maintaining consistent and reliable service for everyone. We are committed to making sure our subscribers have the speed and bandwidth to meet all their needs.
